Attorney-General Consults with Political Parties on Tripartite Legislative Proposal

The Attorney-General, Alpha Sesay, held a consultative meeting with political parties at Brookfields Hotel to review the tripartite legislative proposal and ensure inclusive participation in Sierra Leone’s lawmaking process.

Speaking at the meeting, the AG emphasized the importance of political parties in shaping legislation and strengthening the country’s democratic culture. He explained that key recommendations from the tripartite process and the constitutional review, especially those concerning elections, would be presented to Parliament for debate and approval.

The consultation also addressed the creation of a new constitution, noting that over twenty entrenched clauses would be affected. The AG said public consultations and civic education activities would precede a referendum asking citizens a single ‘yes or no’ question on whether they support a new constitution.

Representatives from the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), the European Union, and International IDEA expressed support for the process, highlighting its role in promoting democracy, transparency, and citizen participation.

Tripartite Coordinator Ngolo Katta said the engagement demonstrated a commitment to building laws that reflect public interests, while the Ministry of Youth Affairs is developing a Youth Development Act to support young people’s participation in politics.

The consultation was organized by the Office of the Attorney-General with funding from the European Union through International IDEA.
