At the Falaba District Council Hall in Mongo Bendugu on Tuesday, 24th March 2026, Statistics Sierra Leone’s Director of Communications and Public Relations, Mr. Samuel Tamba Ansuma, delivered a compelling call for public participation in the forthcoming 2026 National Population and Housing Census.

The awareness session took place during the Civic Day Series organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, drawing local authorities, community stakeholders, and residents eager to understand the significance of the nationwide exercise.
Representing the Statistician General and Chief Census Officer, Mr. Andrew Bob Johnny, Director Ansuma stated that Statistics Sierra Leone’s work centers on credible data collection for national development through surveys and censuses.
He emphasized that the census is not just a routine government activity but a critical national undertaking that shapes development planning, resource allocation, and service delivery across Sierra Leone. Director Ansuma added, “Accurate population data will guide decisions in key sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and employment.”
He also extended warm wishes to the people of Falaba and the Northern Region on behalf of the leadership of Statistics Sierra Leone. He highlighted the heightened preparatory work already undertaken, citing the successful completion of the pilot census in December 2025, which, for the first time in the country’s history, attracted over 20 international observers alongside a large number of local observers.
Director Ansuma further informed attendees that phases one and two of the cartographic mapping work in Falaba District and nationwide have been successfully completed. He noted that, with support from the Government of Sierra Leone and other partners, three committees—the Technical, Advisory, and Publicity Committees—have been established to enhance professionalism and public acceptance of the anticipated nationwide census.

Moreover, Director Ansuma reassured participants that Statistics Sierra Leone has made significant progress in preparations, including mapping, recruitment planning, and public sensitization efforts, all aimed at ensuring a credible and inclusive count in 2026.
“The census is about people, and it begins with awareness and trust,” said the Communications and Public Relations Director, urging residents of Falaba District to embrace the process and cooperate fully with enumerators when the time comes.
He further highlighted the importance of community ownership, stressing that the success of the census depends on citizens’ willingness to provide accurate information.
The Civic Day Series continues to serve as a vital platform for government institutions to engage directly with citizens, clarify national programs, and strengthen public confidence.
For many in attendance, the session not only deepened their understanding of the census but also reinforced their role in shaping Sierra Leone’s future, one household at a time.
