Stats SL, MoICE Finalize Census Strategy

Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL), in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), has concluded a two-day workshop aimed at finalizing the Communication and Publicity Strategy for the 2026 Population and Housing Census.

Held at the Sierra Palms Resort in Freetown from July 30th to 31st, the workshop brought together communication experts, media professionals, civil society groups, artists, bloggers, and mobile network providers. Their goal was to develop inclusive, clear, and culturally sensitive messages that will encourage nationwide participation in the upcoming census.

The workshop focused on finalizing key elements such as:

  • A comprehensive communication and publicity strategy
  • Targeted messages for all population groups
  • An official slogan and logo for the 2026 Census

In his opening remarks, Mr. Francis Tommy, Director of the National Statistical Systems Division at Stats SL, stressed the importance of public trust and awareness. He noted that effective communication is as critical as technical planning in ensuring a successful census.

Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Chernor Bah, emphasized that the census is a civic duty that guides national development in areas like health, education, and infrastructure.

“Our communication must reach every corner of the country. It must be clear, inclusive, and designed to encourage participation. The census is about all of us,” Minister Bah stated as he officially opened the workshop.

The workshop ended with consensus on a strong communication plan, a unifying slogan, and a newly adopted logo, all aimed at making the 2026 Census a national success.
