Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, climate action, peacebuilding, and regional integration during the First Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament currently taking place in Abuja.

Presenting the country’s report on behalf of Sierra Leone, Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina, Deputy Leader of Government Business, outlined key national developments covering the period November 2025 to April 2026.

Addressing the plenary chaired by Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima, Hon. Lamina said Sierra Leone continues to promote pluralism and inclusive governance, citing the National Unity Agreement between the Government and the opposition APC as a key milestone in strengthening political stability.

He also highlighted ongoing constitutional and electoral reforms aimed at improving transparency, voter registration systems, and democratic participation ahead of the 2028 elections.

On governance and the rule of law, the report referenced major reforms including the implementation of the Justice Sector Reform Strategy (2024–2030) and the operationalization of the Criminal Procedure Act 2024. Efforts by peacebuilding institutions such as the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion were also noted.

The presentation further outlined progress in human rights, including improved access to justice, strengthened press freedom, enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024, and measures to address sexual and gender-based violence.

On climate change, Hon. Lamina described it as a major national challenge and highlighted government initiatives under the “Feed Salone” programme aimed at improving food security, agricultural productivity, and import substitution.

He also pointed to ongoing efforts in renewable energy, disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and sustainable mining practices.

On regional integration, the report stated that Sierra Leone remains compliant with ECOWAS obligations and has made progress on regional projects, including the ECOWAS Logistics Depot in Lungi and the Wai Border Market in Pujehun District.

The country also reported successful implementation of the ECOWAS Free Roaming Regulation with several member states, helping to reduce communication costs and improve regional connectivity.

The delegation concluded by reaffirming Sierra Leone’s strong commitment to ECOWAS principles of democracy, peace, security, and economic cooperation across West Africa.
