Parliament Ratifies $250M–$309M Lithium Deal

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has ratified a major mining agreement with Leone Afric Metals (SL) Limited to develop lithium reserves in the Kangi Hill area of Bombali District.

The agreement, signed on 16 March 2026, covers an 80.4 square kilometre lithium-rich site in Ngowahun Chiefdom and is expected to last 25 years, with mining operations commencing in 2027.

Finance Minister Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura told Parliament that the project will attract foreign direct investment of USD 250–309 million, create over 1,000 direct jobs, and boost national revenue.

The company is expected to produce about two million tons of lithium ore annually.

During the debate, MPs praised the project’s potential to promote economic growth, increase employment, and reduce dependency on donors.

They emphasized the importance of renewable energy, local content, and effective monitoring of mining operations.

Acting Leader of Government Business, Hon. Bashiru Silikie, urged the Ministry of Finance to ensure that current and future mining agreements benefit Sierra Leoneans and correct past shortcomings.
