The Wages and Compensation Commission (WCC) has assumed full authority over salaries and benefits for all public sector employees in Sierra Leone.

Speaking at a government press conference at the Miatta Civic Centre, WCC Chairman Hon. Alhaji Alpha Osman Timbo said the Commission was established under President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership to reform and modernize the country’s public sector pay system.
Hon. Timbo explained that the WCC now determines wages for the President, members of the Executive, Judiciary, statutory corporations, commissions, agencies, security forces, and all employees paid from the Consolidated Fund.
He noted that Parliament has repealed previous laws that allowed institutions to set their own pay structures, centralizing authority under the Commission.
“The Commission now has the exclusive responsibility to develop and implement mechanisms for salaries, pensions, gratuities, and other conditions of service for all public sector employees,” Hon. Timbo said.
He added that the WCC will conduct job evaluations, grading, and classification exercises across ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure pay equity and reduce disparities.
Hon. Timbo also announced that 2026 marks the official start of the national pay harmonization process, with special focus on low-income earners.
The government also plans to raise the national minimum wage this year to improve workers’ welfare and public service efficiency.
