The Deputy Director General of the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), Sulaiman B. Sowa, led an emergency response after a fatal incident involving a fallen tree branch along Blama Road in Kenema City on 22 January 2026.

The accident claimed the life of a young woman, Mary Kuyateh, and left three others injured.
The branch fell onto two moving motorbikes carrying four people near the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority office, close to the Government Quarters.
One rider sustained critical injuries, while the other rider and a passenger suffered minor injuries.
The deceased was taken to Kenema Government Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.
NDMA immediately mobilised its Eastern Region Rapid Response Team to clear the debris, cut the fallen tree, and reopen the road safely.
Deputy Director General Sowa urged the public to remain calm, avoid the area until it was cleared, and report hazardous trees or environmental threats via NDMA’s toll-free line 1199.
The Eastern Region Coordinator, John S. Goba, assured residents that NDMA remains on high alert to prevent similar incidents.
The Agency extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.
