Ambassador David Bryan Hunt has resigned from his post as the United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, entering a transition phase for the US diplomatic mission in the country.

Sources confirmed that Ambassador Hunt formally submitted his resignation to President Donald J. Trump and will not return to Freetown to complete his tenure.

Leadership at the US Embassy has now shifted to Chargé d’Affaires Yancey, who is serving as acting head of mission.
In a letter shared with friends and colleagues, Ambassador Hunt explained that his resignation was prompted by personal reasons, including his father’s recent triple bypass surgery, which requires him to be closer to family in Virginia.

He expressed deep appreciation for his time in Sierra Leone and praised the ongoing work of the embassy team.

Though unable to say goodbye in person, Ambassador Hunt conveyed confidence in Chargé Yancey and the embassy’s continued efforts to promote US-Sierra Leone relations.
