The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Haja Ramatulai Wurie, has announced major progress at Kono University of Science and Technology (KUST), including a US$32 million plan for the construction of its permanent campus.
Speaking during a civic engagement, Dr Wurie said KUST is now fully operational, with student enrolment ongoing and key administrative positions such as Vice Chancellor, Registrar, and Finance Director already filled.
She stated that the establishment of the university forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen higher education under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio. According to her, academic programmes are progressing steadily as part of plans to expand access to quality tertiary education.
The Minister also revealed that government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China University of Science to support collaboration in science and mining-related disciplines. She noted that some lecturers have already travelled to China, with arrangements in place for visiting faculty and technical support. Similar engagements are ongoing with institutions in South Africa and other countries.
On infrastructure development, Dr Wurie said documentation for the US$32 million permanent campus project has been completed, describing the university as both an educational milestone and an economic boost for Kono District.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor A. Bah, said the engagement was part of government’s efforts to strengthen public awareness of national programmes and promote inclusive development.
Dr Wurie expressed confidence that with sustained commitment and strong partnerships, KUST will become a leading institution for technical and scientific education in Sierra Leone.
